Directions

Note: Lower part of Bay Road is dirt/gravel and may be rough. Please drive slowly and carefully.

Directions to the Field Station from:
NYS Thruway, Taconic State Parkway, or 9G north of Bard College

To Field Station from the New York State Thruway:

  • Take NYS Thruway to Exit 19 (Kingston/Rhinecliff Bridge). On exiting the toll plaza turn right onto 28 West (towards Pine Hill). Stay in right lane.

  • After the first traffic light, turn right onto 209 North (Rhinecliff Bridge [now George Clinton Bridge]). Follow straight to bridge across the Hudson River (will be toll charge going eastbound) and continue to first light after bridge (Rt. 103 = River Rd. = Annandale Rd.).

  • Turn LEFT onto 103 North. In approximately 3 miles cross a small bridge and continue on LEFT side of a triangular “village green.” After Campus Rd. (first road on right) quickly look for Blithewood Rd. on left (landmark is a small hexagonal gatehouse).

  • Turn LEFT onto Blithewood Rd. between two small stone walls. After one speed bump, make a LEFT onto Bay Rd. (look for Bard Ecology Field Station sign; don’t go into the parking lot before the road). Continue straight down Bay Rd. (dirt road), through a steel gate, to bottom of hill.

  • At the field station, please park where other vehicles can pass, go to the side of the building away from the river, walk up the ramp and ring the doorbell.

To Field Station from the Taconic State Parkway:

  • Take the Taconic State Parkway to the Red Hook/Pine Plains exit (also called Rhinebeck exit). Take Rt. 199 West (LEFT at end of northbound ramp, or RIGHT at end of southbound ramp).

  • Bear RIGHT at the 199 – 308 fork to stay on Route 199. Travel straight through Red Hook until you come to the Rt. 199 – Rt. 9G intersection (third traffic light from Parkway).

  • Turn RIGHT onto Rt. 9G North (NOT Route 9). Travel 1 mile to a traffic light. Make LEFT onto Annandale Rd. at traffic light. Bear RIGHT at triangle (follow signs to Bard College). After Campus Rd. (first road on right) quickly look for Blithewood Rd. (landmark is a small hexagonal gatehouse and two little stone walls at the turn).

  • Turn LEFT onto Blithewood Rd. After one speed bump, make a LEFT onto Bay Rd. (look for Bard Ecology Field Station sign). Continue straight down Bay Rd. (dirt road), through a steel gate, to bottom of hill.

  • At the field station, please park where other vehicles can pass, go to the side of the building away from the river, walk up the ramp and ring the doorbell.

To Field Station from Route 9G North of Bard:

  • Take Rt. 9G South through Germantown, past Clermont State Historic Site, into Dutchess County, and past Tivoli.

  • You will then pass Kidd Lane on the right, and turn RIGHT on the next public road, Dutchess Co. Rt. 103 (a.k.a. Annandale Rd.). This turn is inconspicuous, about 1 mile after Kidd Lane.

  • Follow 103 around a 90-degree turn to the left, and drive south through the Bard College campus (gym, chapel, etc.). Pass most of a row of tall conifers parallel and close to 103 on the right.

  • Turn RIGHT onto Blithewood Rd. between two ornamental stone walls and just before a small white hexagonal building.
